Why is My Volvo Check Engine Light On?
You know that dreaded moment … you get in your car, start the engine and your check engine light goes on. That golden glow from your dash can really put a damper on your day. Volvos are one of many European manufacturers known for popular makes and models that meet the needs of drivers who value streamlined engineering and some of the industry’s highest safety standards.
So, what does it exactly mean when your Volvo check engine light goes on? JA Autowerks’ experienced Volvo technician Robert Giel offers three common reasons why that dreaded light is all aglow:
1. Your Volvo has a defective oxygen sensor – This is a common error when it comes to check engine lights. Oxygen sensors are mounted in the exhaust manifold to monitor how much unburned oxygen is in the exhaust. This is a way to gauge fuel mixture and whether your car is burning rich or lean, which can waste fuel and lower your fuel economy. If the oxygen sensor can’t monitor unburned oxygen in your exhaust, your check engine light will let you know.
2. Your Volvo has one or more bad ignition coils - Ignition coils transform low voltage electrical power to high voltage power. The spark generated by the ignition coil ignites the fuel and air mixture in the engine that enables the car to start and run smoothly. When an ignition coil goes bad, your vehicle can’t run at its best.
3. Your Volvo has a faulty mass air flow sensor - A mass air flow sensor measures the amount and density of the air entering your engine. This helps the computer in your vehicle determine how much fuel to inject into each cylinder. If your mass air flow sensor isn’t measuring air flow into your engine, this triggers a warning in your vehicle’s computer and causes your check engine light to go on.
While these are three common reasons why a check engine light may go on, it is always advisable to have your vehicle inspected by an automotive professional.
